***Above all, we shall not harm children. We shall not participate in practices that are emotionally damaging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading, dangerous, exploiative, or intimidating to children.
Children have the right to be in a safe environment when at school. A child should never be put in any situation where danger is present or where they are in any form of harm.
***We shall strive to build individual relationships with each child; make individualized adaptations in teaching strategies, learning environments, and curricula; and consult with the family so that each child benefits from the program.
Each child is different and unique. As educators, we should strive to build a relationship with each individual child. Children learn in different ways. Educators should teach in a manner that each child can learn.
***We shall involve all those with relevant knowledge (including families and staff) in decisions concerning a child, as appropriate, ensuring confidentiality od sensitive information.
Decision making should not be left up to the teacher alone. There should be a collaboration between all parties involved as appropriate. Confidentially is a must!
***When we have reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect, we shall report it to the appropriate community agencyand follow up to insure that appropriate action has been taken. When appropriate, parents or guardians will be informed that the referral will be or has been made.
Child abuse or neglect is unacceptable in any form. It is the law that an educator report any suspected abuse and follow up to make sure appropriate action was taken.
I also chose the code about child abuse, because I completely agree that all forms of child abuse and neglect are unacceptable. I do feel that everyone should be required to report suspected abuse, but I do wish that people could do so and feel safe that the accused will not be told who they are. I know that I have made a call that was to be confidential, but they took my name and number down so I had no guarantee that they would not tell the person that I was reporting.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with the ideal concerning child abuse. All child abuse is unacceptable and all suspected abuse should be reported. I agree with Tonya that there should be more emphasis on protecting the people who report it. At the end of the day, we are all interested in doing what is best for the child and that concept should not be hindered for fear of retribution.
ReplyDeleteI also chose an ideal that speaks to the uniqueness of each child. We have to treat them as individuals in order for them to succeed. There is no "one size fits all" approach that has a chance of ending in success.
Amy,
ReplyDeleteGreat choices for your ideals. The reality, as you know, is that no matter how good the education that child receives, so many children are born to parents who are not themselves ready for the "professional" responsibilities of raising that child/children.
It isn't necessarily a matter of having a child out of wedlock, or about being able to afford children, it is about being able to love and provide all the positive social and environmental factors to those children.
As I mentioned above, you don't have to have money or be married to raise a healthy child, you just have to be prepared and mature, both emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically.
Just something I think about.
Cheers,
Jeff
Amy,
ReplyDeleteI liked the codes/ideals you chose that you felt were meaningful to you. This in particular was one that I felt is one that I share with you. We have to have those relationships with our families so that we can make decisions that pertain to our children and feel that we are basing our decisions on what is best for the children.
We shall involve all those with relevant knowledge (including families and staff) in decisions concerning a child, as appropriate, ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteGreat choices! I also agree that children should be able to come to school where we can provide and create a safe environment. It is our duty to protect all children in our care. I admire the teacher who put her own life in danger in order to protect her students from the shooter in Newtown, Connecticut.
Hi Amy,
ReplyDeleteGreat Choices, Children should be protected from all hurt, harm, or danger.
