These are some elements I would like to include in my Family Child Care Home. First, I would incorporate a variety of books. These crutial anti-bias tools introduce children to the love of reading as well as to human differences and similarities (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010). A diverse selection of music and DVDs will enhance the diversity of peoples, language, religions, family structures, and cultures. Persona dolls will be used to with storytelling. These stories can be related to the differnces in children as well as used to relate to children's personal lives. I will also use dramatic play props, puzzlesa, blocks and legos, and drawing materials. Adriana Castillo used a variety of methods, in her home, to make children feel welcome as well help them when separating from their parents. Children must feel safe, loved, and nurtured to develop the basic trust they need for healthy development (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).

Amy,
ReplyDeleteSounds like you would have a child care home that was very family oriented. I think the more inviting and comfortable a home looks to parents, the better they feel about leaving their children there. The materials and resources that you identified as having in your child care home sound like you would definitely be embracing diversity. I love the drop off setting that Adriana Castillo had in her family child care home. It allowed for a time of separation which made for an easier transition for all. Thank you for sharing!

Amy, the materials you have chosen for your program will support an anti-bias approach to learning. It sounds as though books will play an important role in your program. I really like the way you are planning to use literature as a starting point to help children discuss diversity. I also liked the ways that Adriana Castillo welcomed children and families into her home. What a great model for family childcare she shared! -Susan
