This week when I talked with others about the different ways culture and diversity are defined, these are the responses I received.
Culture- the way people live, how people talk and dress, the language people speak, where people are from
Diversity- differences, the way people and things are different, I am not really sure what that means
While studying this course, I have come to realize how deep culture is. It is about the things listed and yet much more. Culture also includes values, health care, showing emotions, and other things.
I found that I had some of the same thoughts as the people I interviewed before beginning this class. I have realized how much more culture and diversity encompass.
I have also come to realize how deep culture actually is. The people I interviewed had similar definitions to mine at the beginning of this course. It is my hope that we can spread the word of what culture and diversity are. It is my thought that by doing this we will teach acceptance and value of others individualities.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteI think that this blog exercise has been very revealing in terms of how people describe culture and diversity. It can be very difficult to describe a person's culture, even though they live it constantly. It is a part of each person, even though we may not be sure exactly what all it entails. My participants had similar responses to what you listed and that leads me to believe that maybe the general population does not understand what culture truly is and that leads to the problems that they have with diversity. Thanks for your insightful post! Tiffany
Amy,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post because many people look at culture as inside not out side of the box and now we are beginning to look culture as outside of the box.
