Relationship Reflection

Relationships are very important to me because they help make me who I am. Meaningful relationships are important to our health and success. I have several significant relationships including my husband, my sons (Jacob and Jordan), my mother, sister and brother, and many other family members as well as friends. Each relationship has its own identity and is cultivated in different ways.

It takes time to develop meaningful relationships. Spending time and talking with each other is a vital part in any relationship. Communication, respect, and honesty are  important factors when building relations.

My most ultimate relationship is the one I have with my Jesus, my Lord and Savior. Without this relationship, I would be nothing. I thank Him for this.

As an educator, I want to build relationships with my students and their families. It is important for teachers to communicate with parents regularly. Building parent/teacher connections can include making positive phone calls, inviting parents to participate in decision making for students, share student success stories, and listen to the parents and child.

  1. Hi,Amy
I agree totally with you when you said that relationships are important for your health and your success. Relationships and the people I have them with help me cope when things are not going so well they also serve as my cheerleader to cheer me on.

  2. Hello Amy,
I agree with you that the most ultimate relationship is with Jesus, my Lord and Savior because I strongly believe in him as well. I feel like without him I would be nothing too.

  3. Hi Amy, Thanks so much for your post. You are correct, the relationships we have do form the people we become. I also think that in order to have a quality program, we must form the strong relationships with our children and their families.

    Thanks!

  5. Hi Amy,

I really like the part about making positive phone calls to parents. I think that is extremely important and as a parent, I appreciate it more than you know. I think we all agree that the first thought that runs through everyone's mind when they get a call from school is "oh no, what did he do?" It is great to hear the good things!

A funny note - My youngest twins are Jacob and Jordan! :-)

  6. Amy,
Relationships play a major role in our lives. The relationships that we form with others provide support in different ways. As an educator, I believe it is important to form relationships with parents.

  7. Hi Amy,

I also feel that it is important for educators to call parents to share good news. The teachers in my boys' preschool class also sends us emails with pictures when they are working on projects. This is the most fantastic gift! We have to spend so much time away from our boys throughout the week that when I receive an email at work of my boys having fun, it makes my day!!

  8. Dear Amy,
I'm glad you mentioned that spending time (and communicating) with others is a way to develop those positive relationships. Even if people can't always spend physical time together, they can spend time together in other ways (phone, face time, etc.). The support should be felt and present.
You mentioned that building a positive relationships with parents of our students is important. I agree with you. We have to establish a baseline, which makes it easier for any type of communication between parent and teacher.
    Thanks!
    Anne
